N. Yogish Bhat, deputy speaker of the state legislative assembly, inaugurated the event. In his inaugural address, Mr. Bhat said that teachers give shape to society and should, therefore, be given adequate salaries so that they can lead comfortable lives. Stating that the government is doing a lot for teachers, he urged the public to realize the importance of teachers and give them the respect due to them. He also said that September 5 is a great day because the birth anniversary of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, a great philosopher, teacher, and statesman, is commemorated on this day.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Harish Kumar, commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation, said that teacher – pupil relationship has undergone a huge change. While the teacher was the only source of information in the past, modern pupils get information from a wide range of sources, including books, the Internet, and TV channels, he said, urging teachers to help students develop their creative powers.

Mayor Gulzar Banu also addressed the gathering on this occasion.

The dignitaries on the dais presented flowers to the portrait of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishna.
