Mangalore, Nov 24: The Kannada Cultural Department and the Karavali Kuruba Sangha jointly celebrated Kanakadasa Jayanthi, the 523rd birth anniversary of Kanakadasa at Town Hall on Nov 24, Wednesday. District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated the event and said that Kanakadasa Jayanthi, which is being celebrated only by the Kuruba community at present, should be celebrated by people of all castes and religions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The minister also spoke of the need to safeguard the principles of Kanakadasa and honor the contributions made by him to the society. Everybody is aware of the miracles that took place in Udupi Krishna Mutt during his time, he added.

MLA N. Yogesh Bhat presided over the event and said that we must respect Kanakadasa’s contributions in the form of keerthanas. The 200 keerthanas written by Kanakadasa inspire people to improve their lives, he added. Referring to Mohanatarangini, he said that this is the most outstanding poem written by Kanakadasa. Stating that there are a number of truths hidden in these keerthanas, he said that the celebration of Kanaka Jayanthi should not be limited for a day, but must be done everyday.

Sondha Bhaskar Bhat spoke on the life and achievements of Kanakadasa.

DC Subodh Yadav, H. Prasanna Kumar, Abdul Rahman, B. Nagaraj Shetty, Prakash, and M. Basavaraj were the prominent people on the dais.

A procession from Sharavu Temple to Town Hall, inaugurated by Mayor Rajani Dugganna, preceded the stage programme.
