Mangalore, March 14, 2012 : Amar Narayan, the secretary of disaster management, said that DK, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada have been included under the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project funded by World Bank. He was chairing a meeting on Tuesday, in which Prabhakar Sharma, the assistant deputy commissioner of Udupi; M. T. Reju, the district commissioner of Udupi; Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda, the district commissioner of DK; and Imkongla Jamir, the district commissioner of Uttara Kannada, participated.

He said that, under this project, the funds received by the three districts will be shared between the state and centre on a ratio of 3:1.

When Dr. Channappa Gowda spoke of monsoon-related problems in DK, Mr. Narayan said that three boats each will be sanctioned to the three districts. He said that the funds released ought to be used on disaster management problems and urged DC’s to supply lists of proposed demands.

Speaking on artificial flooding in Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) limits, MCC Commissioner Dr. Harish said that artificial flooding did not lead to major problems last year as precautionary measures were taken.

Mr. Narayan said that there will be no restrictions placed on purchase on emergency material during disasters. He suggested that this material can be presented to the Home Guards, the police department, and the KSRP while DC can make decisions regarding their use and maintenance.
