Mangaluru, Aug 09, 2022: The family members and relatives of the victims in the Vamanjoor serial murder case of 1994 met City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar on August 9, Tuesday and requested him to ensure that Praveen was not released from prison. They also submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner. The family’s appeal comes in the wake of the recent reports that Praveen Kumar who is undergoing life imprisonment for murdering four of his relatives would be released on grounds of good conduct, as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

His family members and relatives meanwhile appealed to the Commissioner that his release would put their lives in danger as Praveen is also a bane on the society.

Over 50  relatives of the family of the four who were killed by Praveen met the Commissioner.  Seetaram Gurupur, the son of Appi Sherigarti who was murdered by Praveen said  once when he had been to the prison to meet Praveen, the latter had threatened to kill them once he is out.

Even Praveen’s wife pleaded that he should not be released.

The Vamanjoor serial murder that shook the district took place on February 23, 1994, Praveen, a resident of Periyadka in Uppinangady had been to his maternal aunt Appi Sherigarti’s house  Vamanjoor but had killed  Appi, her son Govinda, daughter Shakuntala and Shakuntala’s daughter  Deepika with a wooden club while they were sleeping and had escaped with their jewellery worth around Rs 80,000.

As the charges against Praveen were proved, he was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court.  Once while he was being escorted to court, he had given the cops a slip for nearly four years and had stayed in Goa where he had remarried. Later his wife’s brother himself had informed the cops about his presence and he was arrested. Later his death sentence was commuted to life sentence.
