Mangalore Today News Network

Around 200 protestors owing allegiance to a local leader of the TMC entered the branch of United Commercial (UCO) Bank in Dasnagar, Howrah on Friday morning. They allegedly demanded the sanctioning of loans for youths who are registered with the employment exchange. Protestors claimed that there has been a delay in sanctioning such loans since 2011, which prompted them to take action.

The police were called in by the bank manager, but the situation could be brought under control only when the Block District Officer or BDO arrived at the spot.

The bank manager has been asked to hold discussions with the protestors, resolve the issue, and submit a report to local government officials within a week. The bank official has alleged that he was forced to concede to the demands of the protestors backed by the TMC, the ruling party in the state.

The West Bengal government has a scheme, Udiyaman Swanirbhar Karmasansthan Prakalpa (USKP), to assist unemployed youth validly registered with employment exchanges in the state. Under this, commercial banks are to provide subsidized credit with a maximum limit of Rs. 50, 000 to them.
