New Delhi, July 09, 2015: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the multi-core Vyapam scam, taking note of a bunch of petitions filed in this regard. The top court also issued notice to Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav in response to a plea seeking his removal from office in connection with the case.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi appeared for the Madhya Pradesh state government and said that they have nothing to hide.

On Wednesday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had refused to hear an application filed by the state government praying for transferring the investigation to the CBI.

The massive recruitment scam, in which politicians and bureaucrats allegedly received kickbacks for allowing scores of impostors to take written examinations for appointments to top government posts, has shaken the state government and snowballed into an issue of national prominence.

The opposition Congress has trained its guns on Chouhan and repeatedly demanded his resignation over the scam. More than 30 witnesses and accused in connection with the case have died during the probe of the case, the latest being a television journalist who had interviewed the family of an accused who was found dead. On its part, the state government has maintained that every death is ‘natural’ and has no connection with the recruitment scam.
