New Delhi, Oct 6, 2026: Security arrangements were strengthened around the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday ahead of a planned protest by the INDIA bloc over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, officials said.
Security has also been increased at key locations across the national capital since Friday following protest calls by various organisations over the SIR exercise.
The heightened security measures come amid demonstrations announced by opposition parties and other groups over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.
The INDIA bloc has announced that its opposition MPs will march to the Election Commission headquarters on Tuesday. Its leaders are also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu to raise their concerns over the SIR exercise.
The protest call followed a meeting of 19 opposition parties held on September 30.
Security personnel have been deployed in larger numbers around the Election Commission office and other sensitive locations to regulate movement and prevent any untoward incident.
Opposition parties have criticised the Election Commission over the conduct of the SIR exercise. The poll panel has rejected allegations of differences within its three-member body and maintained that decisions concerning the exercise were taken unanimously.
