National level woman athlete assaulted in UP

New Delhi, June 24, 2015: A national level Kabaddi player has been assaulted in Kanpur for allegedly complaining against harassment by two men. Dolly Singh received serious injuries on her face and other body parts after being hit by nearly a dozen men.

Around a month back, some locals had misbehaved with her following which Dolly lodged a complaint. Furious over the complaint, the boys along with some others beat her up and warned of dire consequences if she pursues the case further.

"When I had come back home a month back, some locals in the village misbehaved with me. On 12th June some 10-12 boys with their faces covered came and started abusing me. They even hit me. They did so because I complained against them," Dolly said.

Dolly blamed the local police of not taking any action against the accused despite approaching the senior officials. "I have met DM, SSP and other officials and identified the men behind the attack. But no action has been taken so far. They are a habitual offender," Dolly told India Today TV.

"The doctor has now advised me rest for a month. I have my exams on June 25. What will I do now? My career has been ruined," she added.

The police, meanwhile, said a complaint has been received action will be taken soon. "Charges have been framed. Arrests shall be made accordingly," Kanpur SSP Sharad Mathur said.

Meanwhile, the ruling Samajwadi Party has assured immediate action against all the accused. Party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told India Today TV, "This is an unfortunate incident. I assure you that I will personally look into it and get the FIR registered. Police should have taken action earlier. Government will intervene and justice will be done."
