Lucknow: Silver rain block NH-28 for hours in UP

Lucknow, July 10: Hundreds of villagers gathered on the NH- 28 that connects Lucknow and Nepal border in the Bahraich district on Wednesday afternoon after rumours that silver is raining from the clouds.

The rumours turned out to be true after the villagers found small silver balls lying on the road over a stretch of about 200 meter. The silver rush blocked the highway for over three hours and things returned to normal only after the police reached the spot and dispersed the crowd. Police also had to use mild force to disperse the crowd.

However, many made away with what they got and the police was only left with cleaning the road of the remaining silver and `solve’ the case.

After hours of investigation it was found that two persons were carrying a gunny bag with silver balls on a motorcycle and some of the silver balls fell out of the torn portion of the gunny bag and scattered on the road.

"It appears that they were jewelers as such balls are used to make silver ornaments. The gunny bag tore from some place and they carried on travelling without noticing it.  Though a major chunk of the booty was taken away by villagers, we think that nearly 20 kg silver littered on road", inspector DP Kushwaha of Ramgaon police station said.

As it was nearly impossible to identify the villagers who made away with whatever silver they could collect, no case was registered by the police. "Besides, no one has till now approached us with a complaint regarding any kind of lost property (silver). We have also collected some silver and are waiting for its claimant", Kushwaha said.
