Mangalore Today News Network

Shivamogga, Feb 25, 2026: Tension prevailed in Sulebailu after a 16-year-old student was hacked to death outside a government school on Tuesday. Police have detained seven minors in connection with the case and deployed heavy security across the city to maintain law and order.

The deceased, Sanketh (16), was an SSLC student of the Government High School in Uragadur. The incident occurred shortly after he attended a special class ahead of his board examinations.

Murder

Superintendent of Police Nikhil B said the murder stemmed from a heated argument during a cricket match held two days earlier. Sanketh had allegedly intervened in a dispute between two groups of boys near the school, which later escalated into a fatal assault.

Police confirmed that all seven accused are minors and former students of the same school. “A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case. We are also looking into allegations of ganja consumption in the area, and the accused will be subjected to drug tests,” the SP said.

Amid demands from local residents, the police have initiated steps to set up a sub-station in the locality to curb illegal activities. Tight security arrangements have been made in Uragadur and other parts of Shivamogga city to prevent any further unrest.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 15 lakh for the victim’s family. Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti said Rs 10 lakh will be released from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and Rs 5 lakh from the Education Department.

A case has been registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Compensation will also be extended to another student, Girish, who was injured in the attack.

Shivamogga BJP MLA S N Channabasappa visited the hospital to console the bereaved family and held discussions with senior officials regarding the prevailing law and order situation.
