18 killed, several inured after bus falls into river in Nepal’s Dhading district

Kathmandu, Feb 23, 2026: At least 18 people were killed after a passenger bus plunged into the Trishuli River in Nepal’s Dhading district near Gajuri early Monday morning.

According to Bishnu Prasad Bhatta, spokesperson for the Armed Police Force, the bus was travelling to Kathmandu from Pokhara when it veered off the Prithvi Highway and fell into the river around 1.30 am. The accident occurred about 90 km west of Kathmandu, leaving 26 passengers injured.

Personnel from the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police were deployed to carry out rescue operations.

Authorities have so far recovered 17 bodies from the site, while 28 injured passengers were rescued from the bus, the spokesperson said.

The injured have been admitted to various hospitals for treatment.

Among the deceased was a male passenger from New Zealand. A Japanese woman and a Dutch woman were also among those injured in the mishap.

The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, though police suspect over speeding may have led to the tragedy.
