Bengaluru, May 3, 2025: The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike filed a police complaint against celebrated singer Sonu Nigam over his remarks on Kannada during a concert in Bengaluru.
The complaint was filed by Dharmaraj A, president of the KRV’s Bengaluru city district unit, at the Avalahalli Police Station on Friday. It called the singer’s remarks "objectionable, divisive and harmful to communal harmony."
The incident occurred when a student’s behaviour triggered the singer at a recent musical evening in East Point College, Virgonagar.
It has been reported that a student requested Nigam to sing a Kannada song. In response, Nigam remarked, "Kannada, Kannada, this is the reason why Pahalgam happened."
Dharmaraja’s complaint alleged that by linking a simple request for a Kannada song to a terrorist act, Nigam had insulted Kannadigas and equated their cultural pride and linguistic identity with violence and intolerance.
An officer from the Avalahalli police station confirmed that the complaint had been lodged but said that a decision on registering an FIR would be made after taking legal opinion.
