California, Mar 16, 2026: Lights, cameras and plenty of golden statues… Hollywood’s biggest night unfolded in full glamour as the Academy Awards returned with its 98th edition. Hosted by Conan O’Brien for the second consecutive year, the ceremony took place at the iconic Dolby Theatre, celebrating the best in global cinema with a mix of historic wins, emotional speeches and a few surprises.

Among the night’s biggest winners was Sinners, which secured several major honours. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for his performance in the film, while director Ryan Coogler received the Best Original Screenplay award. Composer Ludwig Göransson also picked up Best Original Score, and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw created history by becoming the first woman to win Best Cinematography.

Oscar

Another standout winner of the evening was One Battle After Another. The film’s screenplay earned Paul Thomas Anderson his first-ever Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, before he later went on to win Best Director as well. The film also picked up Best Film Editing and Best Picture, making it one of the most decorated titles of the night.

In the acting categories, Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, becoming the first Irish performer to receive the honour. Amy Madigan took home Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, while Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, adding a record-setting third Oscar to his career despite not attending the ceremony.

Animation also had its moment in the spotlight. KPop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Feature, while the film’s track “Golden" made history as the first K-pop song ever to win an Oscar for Best Original Song.

This year’s ceremony also introduced a brand-new category — Best Casting, the first new Oscar category since Best Animated Feature was added in 2002. Cassandra Kulukundis won the inaugural award for her work on One Battle After Another.

A number of well-known names appeared on stage as presenters, including past winners such as Mikey Madison, Adrien Brody, Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldaña. Other presenters included Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Pedro Pascal and Channing Tatum.

In a touching segment, the ceremony paid tribute to several industry legends who passed away in the past year, including Rob Reiner, Robert Redford, Diane Keaton and Catherine O’Hara.
