Mangaluru, January 29, 2023: The Goa-based EP Kamat Group made its foray into Coastal Karnataka by introducing its green technology products at a meeting of the Indian Institute of Architects, Mangalore-Manipal Centre, held on Friday, January 27 at the Hotel Ocean Pearl. Rajkumar Kamat, founder and managing director of EP Kamat Group, introduced the biological solutions provided by his company, such as biodigester toilets for waste disposal and sewage treatment plants. They use inoculum bacteria that feed on human waste and filter out clean water that may be recycled for gardening and toilet flushing. "Be passionate about environment protection through engineered products," he urged the architects.
The meeting began with the ‘An Evening with Architect’ session featuring Varna Shashidhar, an award-winning landscape architect from Bangalore who specialises in regional contextual landscapes. In her address, Varna Shashidhar appealed to the architects to celebrate the tradition of cultural landscapes. "India has a deep tradition of cultural landscapes where you find sacred groves and the presence of biospheres, which are spiritual preserves for the people. We need to celebrate this in our work," said.
Varna Shashidhar, who obtained her master’s degree in landscape architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, has extensive practical professional experience in the USA, Sri Lanka and India. Presenting case studies from her own challenging assignments, she showed how even unattractive landscapes can be brought to life with insightful design and planting local flora with pollinating flowers, edible and medicinal plants that attract birds and animals.
Shreyas Nadkarni, director of marketing and international trade, said that EP Kamat Group uses the latest technology developed by government research institutions like DRDO, IIT Madras and RV TIFAC. Mahesh Bakal, head of the wastewater treatment division, said that it was important to treat waste and effluent at their source. "Today the question is not about waste treatment but about where to throw the used water. Biological solutions applied at the source point can solve this issue by making the water reusable," he said.
Venkatesh Pai, chairman of the Indian Institute of Architects, Mangalore-Manipal Centre, welcomed the gathering. Vraksha Baliga introduced the chief guest. Suprith Alva, Monica Kamath and Sarina Bhandary offered flowers to the dignitaries. Sunil Thalithaya gave a vote of thanks. Nikhil Raj was the master of ceremonies. Vivek Raj T.K., regional head of business development, EP Kamat Group, was present.
