UAE, Oct 7, 2026: Gulf Medical University (GMU) has been ranked No. 1 in the world for International Outlook in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, securing a score of 99.4.
GMU recorded the highest International Outlook score among 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories included in this year’s rankings. It also ranked first in the UAE in the International Outlook category.
The ranking marks GMU’s debut in the THE World University Rankings. The university has been placed in the 1001–1200 band overall and is the only specialised medical and health sciences university in the UAE included in the 2027 edition.
International Outlook is one of the five pillars used by THE to assess universities. It evaluates the proportion of international students and staff, as well as the extent of international research collaboration through publications with international co-authors.
GMU’s international profile is reflected in its campus in Ajman, which has students from more than 115 nationalities and faculty members from 56 countries. Students and academics engage in teaching, clinical training and research through GMU and Thumbay Group’s academic healthcare network and international collaborations.
Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Chancellor of Gulf Medical University, said the university’s debut in the THE rankings and its top position in International Outlook reflected its international character and commitment to global healthcare education.
“Healthcare has no borders, and neither does education,” he said, adding that the recognition would encourage the university to further strengthen its research and academic performance across all five ranking pillars.
Prof. Ammar Almaaytah, Dean of Quality Assurance and Institutional Effectiveness at GMU, said the 99.4 score was the result of sustained efforts to attract international talent, develop research collaborations and maintain global academic standards.
He described GMU’s first appearance in the THE World University Rankings as an independent benchmark for the university’s performance and said the institution would now focus on improving its standing across the remaining ranking indicators.
Gulf Medical University is a private medical university in the UAE and serves as the academic anchor of Thumbay Group’s integrated healthcare ecosystem. It offers programmes in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy, biomedical sciences and healthcare management, with clinical training provided through Thumbay’s academic hospitals.
