Dubai, Jan 29, 2022: A Kerala man in UAE was discharged from hospital after recovering from Covid which left him in an unconscious state for six months. The 38-year-old Arunkumar is a frontline worker part of Abu Dhabi government’s Covid task force.

Arunkumar an OT technician contracted coronavirus back in July 2021. He was working as part of Covid task force at LLH Hospital, Abu Dhabi during that period. He has been a staff member at the hospital for over 13 years now.

He quarantined himself soon after testing positive but his health condition deteriorated quickly. He had breathing difficulties and a check up revealed that his lungs were severely infected.

Arunkumar then started breathing with the help of an artificial lung (ECMO machine). During this period, he suffered from a cardiac arrest and underwent procedures such as tracheostomy and bronchoscopy. His treatment was supported by a private healthcare group that granted him Rs 50 lakh as financial aid.

Today, Arun made a miraculous recovery after needing artificial lung support for over 118 days. He is set to fly back to Kerala to meet his friends and family. Arun’s colleagues also presented him with financial assistance as a token for his service.

A job will be offered to Arun’s wife and his child’s education will be covered by the healthcare group. According to Arun, he doesn’t remember much of what happened during his intense fight to stay alive.

"I do not remember anything. I know I had barely escaped from the jaws of death. It is the strength of the prayers of my family, friends, and hundreds of others that I am alive today," he said.

Meanwhile, Minnal Murali movie star Tovino Thomas joined the function virtually, at Burjeel Hospital to celebrate the recovery and wished Arun the best. Actor Tovino said that though he played the role of a superhero in his latest hit, it is people like Arunkumar who are superheroes in real life.

"It is a proud moment for all of us. I am overwhelmed to learn about his inspiring fight. I am and can only be a superhero in reel. But the real superheroes are millions of frontline warriors like Arun fighting the pandemic from the front. Humankind would eternally be indebted to them for their commitment and resilience in saving the world from a deadly virus. Big salutes to you all," said Tovino.
