Update disaster management plan online before June 30. - ZP CEO

Mangalore, June 27, 2014:   Chairing a meeting on disaster management here June 26, Zilla Panchayat CEO Tulasi Maddineni has directed the Mangalore City Corporation to have an onsite emergency plan at a place where chlorine is stored for water purification in Thumbay. She stated the MCC should give priority to the plan.

Official of Factories and Boilers said that around 900 kg of chlorine is stocked in the purification unit. The MCC should prepare an onsite emergency plan to avert any mishap from leakage. The plan should include precautionary measures taken to neutralise the leakage. In case of any leakage, the entire Thumbay village will be affected, he added.



Chief Fire Officer H S Varadarajan said that there is no preparedness plan to deal with railway tragedy in the district.  “The fire service personnel reach the spot where gas tanker turns turtle without any delay. However, the HPCL should be directed to keep ready an empty tanker and it should rush immediately to the spot when the mishap takes place, to shift the gas to another tanker.” The CEO said that disaster management plan of the health department with details on ambulances, nearest doctors with telephone numbers and hospitals should be circulated among all the gram panchayats.CEO Maddineni also directed DHO Dr Shivakumar to be ready with contact details of packaged water units, to supply drinking water to flood affected areas during heavy rainfall.

Home Guards officer said that there are 14 home guard units in the district. The phone numbers of all the home guards are included in the preparedness plan. The CEO said that the PWD and Zilla Panchayat engineering division should check all the minor and major bridges in the district. If any bridge was found weak, then sand bags should be placed to strengthen it. She also directed the Zilla Panchayat Executive Engineer to procure the sand bags and be ready in case of emergency.

DCF Palaiah said that nodal officers have been appointed in each range to clear the trees fallen on the road during heavy rain. Trenches have been laid on the periphery of the forest in Sullia and Belhangady ranges to check wild elephant menace.  The CEO and Additional DC directed all the departments to complete the process of updating disaster management plan online before June 30.


State disaster reduction force :  Karnataka State government has sanctioned state disaster reduction force to Dakshina Kannada. There is a need for land to set up the force in Mangalore, said Chief Fire Officer Varadarajan. He was speaking at a district-level coordination committee meeting here June 26. The State disaster reduction force will have 150 personnel. 


The force will help in containing the disaster. Zilla Panchayat CEO Tulasi Maddineni directed Additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu and Mangalore Tahsildar Guruprasad to earmark 10 acre land at Ekkar near Kateel for the state disaster reduction force.  District Surgeon Dr Rajeshwari urged to clear unauthorised petty shops near District Wenlock hospital.
