Sports department aims to establish international cricket stadium in Mangalore: Jain

Mangalore, Dec 31, 2013: Minister for fisheries, youth affairs and sports, Abhaychandra Jain said that he never expected to become a youth affairs minister, but was very happy to receive the post from CM Siddharamaiah and will work with responsibility.


Speaking to the media representatives at ‘Meet the Press’ organized by Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Union at Press Club on Dec 31, Tuesday, he said that after Congress came to power, CM Siddaramaiah has proposed many schemes during the budget presentation. The funds reserved for the development of sports are being used for laying synthetic tracks all over the state. Karnataka has the highest synthetic track than anywhere else in the country.

The state government has even sanctioned the amount Rs 5 crore for the construction of a velodrome, a stadium for track cycling which will be built at Bijapur, but the fund released for the project was not sufficient, hence the CM has decided to release additional Rs 2 crore to start the project soon.


Jain also said that the work to construct a stadium in Udupi district is in process. The foundation stone for this project was laid by BJP government two years back, but due to technical issues, the work was not started and hence Congress government has taken up the responsibility of completing it.


He also said that, the athletes will be provided with good facilities at Alva’s College, Moodbidri. Further a youth empowerment centre and indoor stadiums will be constructed at Alva’s campus and Government has released the amount of Rs 15 crore for the project.


In order to help the youngsters to brighten up their future, the gym at Mangala stadium has been renovated so to support the athletes.


Jain said that he has already discussed with CM to establish an international cricket stadium in Mangalore. Once we get the land, work will be commenced soon.


Speaking on the Mulky incident took place on December 30, Monday, Jain said that people of Mulky region requested to repair the road and when I accepted their request and started the work, the auto drivers surrounded and started shouting slogans. I just went to argue, but did not hit or fight with anyone. The BJP people spread the rumours of hitting the driver, he added.


Dakshina Kannada working journalists’ union president P B Harish Rai welcomed the guests and gathering. Srinivas Nayak Indaje, secretary, DKWJU proposed vote of thanks.
