Mangalore, June 11, 2014: are installed in the temple to enhance the safety aspect of the temple and it’s valuables, latest  by July 10.

 He went on to state,  that security in temples should be  reinforced and there is no room for compromise on on this vital matter. Security of valuables in the temple should be considered with care. Detailed  Inventory records should be maintained in the temples as per the guidelines issued by the Commissioner of Endowment department. Further,  registered valuers in Dakshina Kannada will be asked to conduct a valuation of the jewellery.   One copy of the catalog should be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu said,  “The district administration will also issue a guidelines to the police department to ensure that police on duty  keep a strict vigil on the temples coming under their jurisdiction.” Those temples with safe rooms should ensure that staff in charge do not misuse the jewellery". The temples must compulsorily appoint two watchmen during night. “If there is one watchman, how can he safeguard the property of the temple?” he asked.

He said that strong room, CCTV cameras and safety lockers in the temples are need of the hour. He said temples in the State were divided into A, B and C categories on the basis of their income. “Those temples whose annual revenue is higher than Rs 25 lakh per year fall under the A category, between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 25 lakh are in the B category and those whose income is less than Rs 10 lakh are in the C category. Accordingly, there are 21 ‘A’ category, 37 ‘B’ category and 433 ‘C’ category temples in Dakshina Kannada district.


The ADC said that footage of CCTV camera should be stored for 30 days. Temples administrations should follow accepted regulations while appointing security personnel to safeguard the temples. The temples should not depend on strangers. Majority of the executive officers of temples said that they have either strong room or bank locker to safeguard the valuable ornaments and idols of the temple. The temple authorities said that  normally ‘hundi’ is opened once in a month and the collected money is deposited in the bank.  Officials of  some of the temples mostly  under ‘B’  and ’C’ category urged the district administration to recommend to the government to release funds for installing CCTV cameras.  Endowment department AC M Nagaraj and Muzrai Tahsildar Prabhakar were present. The safety and security of religious places is in focus.
