Mangalore, July 15, 2014: The heavy rains that have been lashing the coastal districts have claimed two lives in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and one life in Kasargod district.
On July 14, Monday, Shekhar Poojary, a labourer of B Kasaba village near Bantwal met a watery grave in Netravathi river, when he accidentally slipped into the water while washing his leg. Efforts by the locals to rescue him went in vain. In another case, eleven year old Abhishekh of Ulloor in Kundapur, met a tragic end after he slipped into a water filled quarry pit near his house. He was the son of Rama and Kusuma couple. His mother Kusuma had jumped into the water to save her son, but in vain. The woman has been rescued and is being treated at the Kundapur Government Hospital.
In Kasargod, a 17 year old boy, a Plus Two student of a school at Madayi, lost his life due to electrocution after he accidentally came into contact with a live wire on the ground on July 14, Monday. There is information that two persons have been washed away in an overflowing river in Kasargod. They are still missing.
With overflowing rivers, the DDPI of the respective districts have been empowered to declare holidays to schools.
