Prohibitory orders under Section 144 continue in Ullal; security stepped-up

Mangalore, Feb 7, 2014:   Prohibitory orders under Section 144 continues in Ullal  which is boiling since the past  couple of days after a group of miscreants resorted to vandalism, stone pelting and damaged vehicles and boats.

 It has been gathered that a Bhajana Mandir has been stoned and violent incidents were reported from Tokkottu and other places.

Sources revealed that over 50 persons have been taken into custody.  Many have also been injured in the clashes, say reports. Meanwhile, Mangalore Police Commissioner R Hithendra has clarified that curfew has not been imposed in Ullal.

 Though Ullal seemed to return to normalcy on Thursday, by evening, the situation worsened following some rumours.A couple of stoning incidents were also reported and police had to resort to lathi charge to quell the mob.

Peace meet was also held at Ullal Police Station on February 8, Thursday evening. As soon as the meet was over and the participants came out there were rumours that boats were set afire and clashes were underway.

This agitated the Mogaveera community as hundreds of people gathered on the streets. When things were almost getting out of control, police rushed to the scene and dispersed the crowd.

Meanwhile, police who raided several places during night have taken several into custody. At some places, they had to even face stiff resistance when public appealed against taking innocents into custody.

In Kotepura, at least three to four police men sustained minor injuries when  wooden pieces were hurled at them  when they were busy dispersing the crowd. It is learnt, the miscreants even had turned off street lights before resorting to stoning. Additional police forces were summoned to take control of the situation.

Prohibitory orders   will continue in Ullal till Friday morning. On Thursday shops and business establishments in Ullal and Tokkottu downed their shutters voluntarily. Though bus services were as usual, buses did not ply towards Ullal Kodi, Kotepura and Mogaveerapatna.

Health Minister Khader visits Ullal: On Thursday, Minister Khader visited Mogaveerapatna, Kotepura and Kodi areas . He also visited houses which were damaged in stoning as well as the residence of a boy who was assaulted and met the boy Manish who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital at Derlakatte.

At one juncture, the minister was surrounded by locals and taken to task. They also complained that innocents were taken into custody. The minister assured them that he would ensure that no innocent is punished. In Mogaveerapatna,  Mogaveera women  shouted slogans against the minister after they  were not allowed to meet him.
