Opposing setting up of ice plant, Kandak residents try to barge into MCC office

Mangalore, June 11, 2014: The plans to set up an ice plant in Kandak area of Mangalore by some private firm, and the opposition to the same by locals, snowballed into a major controversy on June 10, Tuesday when angry  residents of Kandak tried to barge into the MCC office. The residents feel the setting up of the ice plant would further aggravate the water problem in their area.

 

 

 

 

 It is learnt the villagers were particularly upset as despite their complaint to the MCC last month opposing the proposed plant, the  District Planning Officer Balakrishna Gowda and Additional District Planning Officer had visited the spot for an inspection  and even reportedly told them that the firm had all requisite documents and therefore  got the licence.

Sources  also said that the two officials failed to produce the documents before the locals  as per their demand. This infuriated the locals who reportedly gheraoed the officials.

Finally, Mayor Mahabala Maarla, Commissioner Ajith Hegde arrived along with Pandeshwar police and the protestors were summoned to the MCC office for talks with the Commissioner. However, when residents arrived, they found the Commissioner busy in another meeting and were visibly upset. Some even tried to barge into the office resulting in chaos.

Everything cooled down after the Commissioner accepted the memorandum from the Kandak residents as well as the Additional District Town Planning Officer who has accused the local corporator Azeez Kudroli of instigating the protest.
