Officials rescue 48 yr old woman who was tortured, placed under house arrest by husband at Kateel

Mangalore, Dec 20, 2013: A 48 year old woman who was allegedly kept under house arrest by her husband since the past four years at a house at Ajar near Kateel was rescued on December 19, Thursday by a team of officials and the Mulki police.

The woman named Sulochana was in a pathetic state when she was rescued and was spotted in a corner of the room of the house. It is learnt, her husband Madhava Poojari (55) had pushed her to such a pitiable state.

 

The officials of the Department of Women and Child Welfare, Mannebettu Gram Panchayat and Mulki police had rushed to the house after being tipped off  in this regard.

It is learnt, Sulochana who hailed from Kalianpur was married to Madhava Poojari nearly 23 year ago. A few years after marriage  Madhava quit his job and settled at Ajar when his behaviour began to change. Sulochana said he first drove away his mother and sister  and then began harassing her. She said she was being harassed and tortured since 20 years  and   since the past few years she was not even allowed to move out of the house. Madhava even had reportedly been hitting Sulochana on her knees so that she could not walk.

Sulochana said Madhava made her starve and left for work after closing all doors and that a kind hearted neighbour would give her  food once a while.

The woman has been  admitted to the hospital.
