Mangalore, May 22, 2014: A seminar on ‘Bio-Diversity in Islands’ was organised at the Netravathi Auditorium of the Zilla Panchayat on May 22, Thursday under the auspices of the State Bio-Diversity Board. The seminar was held to coincide with the International Day for Biological Diversity.
Speaking after inaugurating the programme, DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai regretted that several rare species of bio-diversity in islands are getting extinct owing to the greed of man. He also stated that such programmes are essential to sensitize the public on the need to conserve bio-diversity.
Delivering the key note address, RK Singh, Member of the State Bio-Diversity Board said the Union Government had implemented the Bio-Diversity Conservation Act in 2002 with the sole objective of protecting the precious natural wealth. He also informed how the Nethrani Island has witnessed much development after the government declared it as a Bio-Diversity Hotspot
Prof. Shivananda of Fisheries College and others were present.
