Mangalore, Jan 13, 2014 : The Centenary celebrations of St Agnes Convent were held at the St Agnes Campus in the city on January 12, Sunday in the presence of several dignitaries and religious heads.
Rev Dr Aloysius Pal D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore who presided over the function described the Convent as a guiding light to the Apostolic Sisters who have been rendering yeoman services to the society. He also recalled the contributions made by several in the success of the institution over the past century.
Sr Agatha Mary, Superior General, Apostolic Carmel was present as a chief guest . In her address, she said it was the far sighted vision of Mother Aloysia that led to the formation of the institution which has contributed a great deal towards the empowerment of women by educating them. She called upon the students of the institution to emulate the ideals of the great founder and exhorted the students to consider it a duty to serve the downtrodden in the society.
JR Lobo, MLA of Mangalore South constituency, also spoke as a chief guest. Sr M Linette, Provincial Superior, Karnataka, Flavia Agnes, alumnus of St Agnes, Fr Anthony Serrao, Parish Priest of St Sebastian Church, Bendore Church, Sr M Lydia, Superior, St Agnes Convent, was also present on the dais.
Fr Anthony Serrao read out the blessings sent by the Pope. Nine superior generals of the Convent namely Sr Agatha Mary, Sr Linette, Sr Vargilia, Sr Stanilis, Sr Karisma, Sr Maria Jyothi, Sr Shalini, Sr Maria Kripa and Sr Lydia were felicitated on the occasion.
A Eucharistic Mass was held earlier with Bishop of Mangalore as the chief Celebrant and Msgr Dennis Moras Prabhu, Fr Anthony Serrao, Fr Archie Gonsalves, Fr Pius James D’Souza, and Fr Julian Fernandes as Co Celebrants.
A ballet on Mother Aloysia was presented on the occasion.
