Mangalore, June 1, 2014: Asha Timmappa Gowda and Satish Kumpala of the BJP were elected unopposed as the President and Vice President respectively of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat. This is the last term of the present Zilla Panchayat administration.

The elections were held on May 31, Saturday. Only one nomination each were filed for the two posts.  KT Shailaja Bhat, former ZP Chief and Balakrishna Suvarna proposed the name of the two respectively.

Mysore Regional Commissioner MV Jayanthi  who was the election officer announced that the two were elected unopposed.

The tenure of the newly elected president and vice president of the Zilla Panchayat will be from June 8, 2014 to February 7, 2016. The post of President was reserved for general category lady candidate and that of the Vice President to the general category.The 35 member Zilla Panchayat council has 24 BJP and 11 Congress members.

Regional Commissioner B Ramu, ZP CEO Tulasi Maddineni and others were present.

Speaking after her election, the new ZP Chief Asha Timmappa Gowda assured to give priority to drinking water, improvement of underground water resources and cleanliness. She is one of the senior ZP members and represents Bellare in Sullia taluk. She also has the experience of serving as Sullia TP Chief in 1996. She has even handled various party posts so far.

New ZP Vice President Satish Kumpala represents Kotekar in Mangalore taluk and has served as Someshwar Gram Panchayat  member twice. The educational qualification of both Asha and Satish Kumpala is SSLC.
