Udupi, Mar 13, 2014: It was a day when prisoners lodged in the Udupi jail enjoyed their fullest extent by forgetting all their worries and tensions. The credit goes to the Udupi Giants Group which organised a unique cultural programme at the Udupi District Prison as part of its efforts to bring about a mental reformation in the prisoners.
Dr P. Bhandari, noted psychiatrist was the resource person of the programme. He gave an example of Michael Santos, a young man hailing from a rich family who underwent 25 years of imprisonment for drug peddling in the US and how he during his prison life read library books, developed a positive attitude and even continued his education to earn a masters degree and a PhD. The prisoner also authored eight books, Dr Bhandari informed. He further urged the under trials to always develop a positive attitude towards life and also take a pledge that they would not commit any mistake henceforth.
Sowmya J, Udupi District Prisons Officer, Devadas Kamath, President of Udupi Giants Group, Ganesh Ural, Secretary, Shivaprasad Rao, Director of U Channel of Udupi and others were present.
A variety of cultural events including dance, songs, mimicry and comedy show were conducted. The prisoners also danced to the tune of popular numbers with great enthusiasm. Winners in the contests were also awarded. Fruits were distributed to the inmates on behalf of the Giants Group.
