Udupi, May 16, 2014: Shobha Karandlaje, who commenced her political career in Udupi has defeated Congress candidate, Jayaprakash Hegde, by a margin of nearly one lac votes to retrieve it’s strong hold on Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency.
A visibly jubilant Shobha expressed her gratitude to the people and party workers for contributing to the history and stated, "This is not a victory for me personally alone but victory of people and party workers. I have been in this constituency for only a month, but seeing the hard work I did in just one month, the people have chosen me.
I assure to bring good development to this my constituency." Jayaprakash Hegde, arrived at the counting center in the morning, he left early after sensing that his loss was imminent. Karandlaje, one of the few women BJP MP’s from Karnataka, may be given a berth in the union ministry is every ones expectation.
Shobha Karandlaje, a post-graduate and former state minister and leader of KJP which merged with the BJP just before the election. In the last election, it’s candidate, Sunil Kumar, had lost to Jayaprakash Hegde.
The fact that independent MLA, Halady Srinivas Shetty from Kundapur, who had remained neutral earlier because of the humiliation he had faced from BJP leaders, had allowed his supporters to go with the BJP seems to have tilted scales in favour of the saffron party after a brief exile after the resignation of the then MP, D V Sadananda Gowda, who was CM of Karnataka.
The social and linguistic prowess of this nature blessed belt with sensitive ecology and environmental issues as well as it’s tourist potential deserves due consideration, which the people will eagerly look forward to.
