Lucknow, Jul 12: charge of rape was filed against IPS officer Amitabh Thakur at a police station in the Uttar Pradesh capital on Sunday, a day after he filed a complaint against Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for allegedly threatening him.

The FIR, filed in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar police station, named Thakur as an accused in a rape case.

The senior police officer had on Saturday alleged that Yadav had threatened him over the phone, asking him to “mend his ways”.

Though Yadav has not commented on Thakur’s allegation, a Samajwadi Party leader dismissed the charge.

Thakur, the inspector general of civil defence, told ANI that he considered the FIR against him a “return girft”.

“I consider this as return gift from Mulayam Singh Yadav as I dared to make his threats public. We welcome this FIR, I’m sure justice will be done,” he said.

Thakur said he intended to approach the high court to seek a CBI probe into the issue.

His wife Nutan Thakur said she feared more cases would be registered against her and her husband because he had made “Mulayamji’s threats” public. “Both FIRs should be thoroughly investigated, the one registered by us and the one registered by (the rape victim),” she said.

Opposition BSP leader Sudhindra Bhadoria sought a CBI probe into the matter to ascertain the facts.

According to Nutan, the provocation behind the alleged threat to her husband could have been the FIR lodged by her against state mines minister Gayatri Prajapati.

Nutan, also an RTI activist, claimed Prajapati and others had tried to frame her and her husband in false cases, including those of rape, after she had filed a complaint with the Lokayukta against the minister.

Hours after Thakur filed his complaint, a woman walked into the women’s police station in Lucknow and recorded a statement that she was one of the “rape victims”.

Thakur, who has helped his wife in raising social issues, released an audio tape on Friday that purportedly featured the voice of the Samajwadi Party chief.

"I felt I should take a stand. Therefore, I gave a complaint against Mulayam Singh Yadav," Thakur said on Saturday.

"At around 4.45 pm, a phone came from Mulayam Singh’s residence and he talked to me. He told me that whatever had happened in Jasrana, Firozabad, where I had been assaulted by one of his relatives and an MLA in 2006, much harsher things will happen to me if I don’t mend my ways."

Senior Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandey said police will ascertain whether the audio tape released by Thakur is genuine.
