Murder convict picked up from ’Bajirao Mastani’ set

Mangalore Today News Network

Mumbai, Oct 21, 2015: He thought serving tea on the sets of a multi-starrer period film would help him evade the notice of cops. But that was not to be. Anil Giri (32), who, along with Arun Gawli, was convicted for the murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar in March 2007, was arrested yesterday from the sets of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ’Bajirao Mastani’, starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. He worked as a spot boy on the sets.

He had managed to evade arrest for over eight months, after jumping parole in February. Dahisar police said Anil had sought a 30-day parole on the pretext of performing last rites of his father. However, he never returned to the prison after his parole concluded.

Following his disappearance, the jail authorities informed Saki Naka police, as Anil resided in the area, and a case was registered against him in March. Giri is one of the 22 people held guilty of murdering Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar in March 2007.

Police said it was Anil who had scouted the area where Jamsandekar resided and rode one of the two motorcycles to help the killer flee the spot after bumping off the Sena corporator.

Giri and 11 others — including Gawli — were convicted under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in August 2012 and sentenced to life imprisonment. They were sent to Nashik Central Jail.

Assistant Police Inspector Prakash Pawar from Dahisar police station said, “We reached the sets in Bhor, near Pune, where the unit was shooting in the wee hours of Tuesday. The team had Giri’s photograph. Upon showing it around, one of the crew members pointed at him following which Giri was apprehended.”

After his arrest, Anil was booked under Section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code and was handed over to Saki Naka police. Later, officials from Saki Naka police station produced him in a local court and handed him over to their counterparts at Nashik jail.

The arrest

Dahisar police were already on the lookout for Anil’s uncle Vijay Giri. It was Vijay who had shot Jamsandekar. “Vijay was out on a 14-day parole in April 2015 from Nashik Jail to take care of one of the family members whom he claimed had been suffering from some disease.

However, upon expiration of his parole, he failed to report at the jail. So an FIR was registered against him at Rawalpada. Since the area falls under our jurisdiction, we started probing the case,” Pawar said. The cops recently received a tip-off that Vijay was hiding at his elder brother Samar Bahadur Giri’s residence in Vasai.

Based on this information, Dahisar police laid a trap and arrested Vijay on Saturday night. They also booked Samar for aiding him. It was Vijay who revealed Anil’s whereabouts during interrogation. Soon, a police team was formed and sent to Pune to arrest Anil.
