Individuals who accessed the leaks charged buyers Rs 35,000, a figure higher than some monthly entry-level salaries. Prices eventually fell to Rs 5,000, presumably driven down by burgeoning supply.

Sources also say the police is likely to perform handwriting analysis on suspects to find a match with the penscript in the leaked papers.

Investigators from the Delhi Police’s crime branch questioned the CBSE’s controller of examinations for four hours Thursday evening. Two others were also interrogated.

The trio answered questions about the measures the CBSE took to deal with the leak, and also about specifics of test administration, such as the printing, transport, and protection of exam booklets.

As many as 1,000 students could have accessed the question papers, investigators have learned.

On Tuesday, the news that Class XII and Class X students would be forced to re-take their Economics and Mathematics exams sparked an outpouring of despair and fury, and pushed high school-goers in Delhi to protest in the streets.

"I fully understand your anguish, helplessness, anger and frustration," Prakash Javadekar, the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, told students in a tweet. "It is really painful that criminals do the wrong and the honest and brightest suffer."

Javadekar promised that the government would endeavour to make future tests "fool-proof."

The announcement of the leaks came weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi published a book titled Exam Warriors, and spent time giving students advice on taking tests at a Delhi event named Pariksha Pe Charcha.
