Free Replacement of Passports Ruined in Kerala Floods: EAM

Kerala, Aug 13, 2018 : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday,12 August, announced that passports damaged in floods in Kerala will be replaced free of cost by the government.

"There are unprecedented floods in Kerala causing huge damage. We have decided that as the situation becomes normal, passports damaged on account (of) floods shall be replaced free of charge. Please contact the concerned Passport Kendras," Swaraj tweeted.


Kerala has been reeling under massive floods in which around 39 people have lost their lives and nearly 54,000 people have been left homeless. Around 10 of the 14 districts in state have been affected by the floods.

Earlier that day, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas in the state with Kerela’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He termed the situation “very serious” and further announced that the Centre will provide an additional Rs 100 crore to Kerala.

CM Pinarayi Vijayan estimated the loss of the disaster to be around Rs 8,316 crores, and said the effects will be felt for a long time. In another tweet, the chief minister said that the state was in the midst of the “second worst flood after 1924.”
