Dalit man’s nose chopped off for having food with upper castes in UP

New Delhi, February 19, 2015: A shocking incident of caste violence has been reported from Jalaun in which a Dalit man’s nose was reportedly chopped off by members of an upper caste family for dining with them.

dalitAccording to a report published in The Times of India , the incident took place at Surpati village in Madhogarh area of Jalaun. Amar Singh, who works as a labourer in the Dalit--dominated village, had gone to a wedding with his master’s family. At the event, he had food, after which some people created an uproar.

The report quoted BSP leader Daddu Prasad telling, "Some people on the bride’s side raised the issue with them and other guests threatened to leave without having food on discovering that a Dalit was breaking bread with them."
 
 
The upper caste family members are reported to have told Amar Singh, "Tumne hamaari naak katwa di. Ab hum tumhaari naak kaatenge. (since you caused us such humiliation, you shall get equivalent punishment)." After which, they forced him down and slashed his nose with a domestic knife.

Bleeding heavily, Amar was rushed to a Jhansi hospital, said the report. A case was registered after Jhansi DIG AK Singh got the was informed about the incident. However, villagers allege that no arrests have been made so far due to the ’political connections’ of the accused.

In the village, Dalits are not even allowed to touch the utensils used by upper castes. They are also not allowed to draw water from the same well.
