Srinagar, Sep 20, 2016 :  Eight terrorists were killed on Tuesday while trying to cross over into Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri, where 18 soldiers were killed in a terror attack two days ago.

Army sources say a large infiltration attempt was stymied and a group of 15 terrorists were stopped at the border as they tried to enter Lachipura in Kashmir.

A gun-battle is still on between the terrorists and the forces and may continue for hours, say sources.

This morning, the Pakistan Army violated ceasefire and fired incessantly at Indian posts in Uri for nearly 20 minutes, in what is now believed to be cover fire for the terrorists crossing over.

On Sunday, four terrorists sneaked into a military base, threw grenades and opened fire, causing the most number of deaths that the Army has seen in years. The terrorists, said to be from the Jaish-e-Mohammed whose chief Masood Azhar is based in Pakistan, were killed in an intense three-hour gun-battle.

The Army has been on high alert in the dense forest area where terrorists tried to enter today. The fresh infiltration attempt was seen as unusually large and a sign of an escalation in terrorist activities at the border.

India has directly blamed Pakistan for the Uri terror attack and has decided to isolate the country globally.

The Army said on Monday that it reserves the right to respond to any cross-border terror attack "at the time and place of our own choosing."
