Sound engineer, newly married woman from India among five killed in Sharjah building fire

Sharjah, April 12, 2024: A fire broke out in a nine-storey residential tower with 750 apartments in Sharjah’s Al Nahda area on Thursday night. The fire claimed the lives of five residents and injured 44 others in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Among those killed were two Indian residents, whose identities have been confirmed by family friends, and social workers, reported the Khaleej Times.

Michael Sathyadass, a sound engineer from India, was one of the two Indian victims.

Sathyadass worked as a sound engineer at DXB Live in Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC), according to his brother’s social media tribute, played a crucial role behind the scenes at concerts featuring artists like Bruno Mars and AR Rahman.

The second Indian victim was a 29-year-old woman from Mumbai who had just got married in February.

"They got married in February in Madinah. After their wedding, they moved in together to live in the building in Al Nahda where the tragic incident occurred," the deceased woman’s friend was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times.

Her husband remains in critical condition at the hospital.

"Doctors said his condition is very critical... We are all praying for him," said a friend.

The Indian Consulate General confirmed their support for the families of the deceased and those injured.

Their families have arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to deal with the aftermath.

INVESTIGATION AND SUPPORT ONGOING

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Social worker Ashraf Thamarassery indicated the Indian woman might be buried in the UAE after necessary procedures.

The company Michael Sathyadass worked for, DXB Live, described him as an employee with "exceptional dedication and loyalty" whose contributions had a "lasting impact." They offered support to his family.
