Villagers will protest against illegal sand mining: Abubakker

Mangalore Today News

Mangalore, Dec 28: S Abubakker Sajipa, the vice president of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Minority Cell, has alleged that the government departments are working hand-in-glove with those involved in illegal sand mining. He warned that the villagers will vehemently protest against the illegal sand-mining activities if steps are not taken to put an immediate end to it.

He said that sand mining from the Nethravathi River was going on unchecked in Talemogru and Kotekain in the Saipapadu Village of Kurnadu Gram Panchayat. The district administration, the Batwal Revenue Department, the Department of Mines and Geology, and Kurnadu Gram Panchayat have chosen to ignore this fact in spite of being alerted about it. No action is being taken against the people involved in sand-mining activities without the required permit, he alleged.

Abubakker said that the district administration had issued a notice to the Mines and Geology Department to halt illegal sand mining on Dec 8, in spite of which illegal sand mining activities are still going on.

The deputy director of the Mines and Geology Department had issued a directive to 4 sand miners to quit sand mining and transportation activities till the issue was discussed during the mines’ adalat to be organized in the DC’s office on Dec 24. However, all notices and directives have been completely ignored by the land miners, alleged Abubakker.
