Pathetic plight of Muslim Residential School

Pathetic plight of Muslim Residential School

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Dec 11: The conditions of the Muslim Residential School, Thokkottu, are pathetic. A Aziz Malar, member of the Zilla Panchayat, raised the issue of the pathetic conditions of this school at the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting on Tuesday and asked whether the Social Welfare Department is going to close the school. He said that the children do not have any beds to sleep on and are forced to sleep on donated old clothes.

Since the children complained of lack of clean drinking water facilities and other basic amenities, the school, which was initially situated in Natekal, was moved to Thokkottu. However, the shift hardly changed the sorry plight of its students. Now, the parents are refusing to send their children to school.

The Social Welfare Department is apathetic toward the condition of this school. Although the government sanctions a sum of Rs. 40 - 50 lakhs for the maintenance and development of the school infrastructure, the department hardly releases any of these funds for the development of the school. Moreover, Ganapathi, the officer of the district Social Welfare Department, asked the headmistress to go on indefinite leave, because the parents complained against her and her apathetic attitude toward the condition of the school.

Abhyachandra Jain, MLA of Moodbidri, who was presiding over the KDP meeting, ordered the authorities concerned to call a meeting. He requested them to invite UT Khader, the local MLA, the TP president, and the ZP members to find a solution to the problem.
