Mangalore, Feb 5: PPC College Udupi was declared to be the overall champion of Imprints 2010; and the runner-up trophy was conferred on SDM College Ujire at the end of the 2-day national-level science festival Imprints 2010 organized by the Science Department of St Aloyius College (Autonomous) during its valedictory ceremony on Feb 4.

A documentary titled “Genesis of 11th Imprints” was presented at the beginning of the valedictory ceremony.

Padmabhusan Prof B M Hegde, the former vice chancellor of MAHE Deemed University, Manipal was the chief guest of the event. Quoting from “Closing of the American Mind,” a book authored by Allen Bloom, Prof Hegde said that the author has explained how higher education has failed democracy and impoverished modern students.

Speaking about pollution, he said that noise pollution is the worst of all varieties of pollutions, which affects human health in the worst manner.

He advised students to learn as much as possible and not limit themselves to their curriculum. He said human life must be enjoyed; at the same time, it must be used for the benefit of oneself and others. He said that the goal of education must be to transform every human being into social animals. He concluded by advising students to share what belongs to God with everybody and to enjoy their lives.

Rev Fr. Joseph Rodrigues SJ, the rector of St Aloysius Institutions, said that science is closely related to almost everything in life. He urged students to work hard and bring glory and fame to St Aloysius College. He also presented a memento to the chief guest and conferred awards on the winners. Mr. Chengappa, the student co-ordinator, proposed the vote of thanks.
