Media has exhibited selective blindness: home minister

Mangalore Today News Neywork

Mangalore, Feb 4: Home Minister V S Acharya said that certain statements in the Justice Somashekara Commission interim report were not the commission’s observations, but just submissions made to it. He was interacting with media persons in Bangalore on Tuesday.

The home minister was also surprised that the contents of the interim report were made public. He said: “As per norms, commissions of enquiry submit their report in a sealed cover to the government. After obtaining a nod from the cabinet, the reports are tabled in the legislature. But we will not take exception, the report has already been made public, nothing can be done, it’s ok.”

He said that the interim report has 3 parts: recommendations of the commission, synopsis to the public, and impression given to the commission. The treatment meted out by the police to the protesting Christians and the role of the Bajarang Dal in the church attacks were just “impressions given to the commission” by those who deposed before it, said the home minister.

Acharya said that there has a difference between the impressions of the commission and the impressions of those who deposed before it. He pointed out that the media has reported the impression of the deposing parties, and not of the commission itself.

The home minister also said that government will study the report thoroughly before taking any action or implementing any of the commission’s recommendations.
