MCC continues demolition drive

MCC continues demolition drive

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan 30: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), in the course of yet another demolition drive, razed 4 shops in Marakada and Kuloor on Jan 29, Friday. Assistant Revenue Officer Praveen headed the demolition drive as per the instructions of MCC Commissioner K N Vijayaprakash.

In Kuloor, a petty shop and 3 illegal buildings were demolished. Two of the structures that were razed ought to have been demolished nearly 4 months back, but were allowed to stand because of political influence. Two of the structures razed in Marakada had been constructed without a license.

Mr. Praveen informed media correspondents that the existence of a number of illegal structures had been brought to the notice of MCC. At least 19 buildings in Mangalore were built without the required license. Besides, these illegal structures have also violated building laws. The demolition drive will continue, he said; and added that people have made a number of complaints about illegal structures and the MCC is investigating these complaints.

People have been demanding the removal of a number of illegal petty shops set up on the footpaths, which make movement very difficult for pedestrians in general and senior citizens in particular. Unfortunately, leading a demolition drive against these petty shops is quite a challenge because the owners of the petty shops are in the habit of setting them up shortly after MCC razes them down.
