Call to save agriculture

Call to save agriculture

Mangalore Today News

Udupi, Feb 8: Keshava Murthy, convener of the Banuli Krishikara Vedike, Mysore, said that farmers should save agriculture by encouraging their children to continue in their footsteps.

He was delivering keynote address at the inauguration of a farmers’ convention organised by the Udupi Zilla Krishika Sangha here on February 6.

Negative opinion
Mr. Murthy said that farmers themselves had a negative opinion about their occupation. Theydid not want their children to continue in agriculture. They wanted their children to take up white-collar jobs in cities.

While doctors and engineers were proud of their children taking up the same profession, farmers were seldom proud of their children taking up agriculture. Farmers did not want their daughters to marry an agriculturist, he said.

Conceding that lack of agricultural workers was a major problem, he said “all this can change if farmers learn to respect their own occupation”.
