Raichur, February 16: Notwithstanding the Karnataka State Cabinet’s approval for a new law to ban the slaughter of cows and calves, thousands of rams and buffaloes were slaughtered at the Durugamma Devi Jathra in Donnegudda village of Kushtagi Taluk in Raichur district.

Claiming the act as sacred one, nearly hundreds of butchers slaughtered the thousands of buffaloes and 7000 rams under the guidance of Hindu priests.


Some of the police official said that the slaughter activity carried out secretly by the butchers. But according to eye-witnesses thousands of devotees were seen taking part in the Jathra including some local leaders and government officials.


Speaking on the matter the district administration claimed that, it had stopped animal slaughtering in Donnegudda two years ago.
