Puttur, Mar 20 2018: Vivekananda College of Engineering and Technology, Puttur (VCET), Team Mustangs, comprising 35 students from Electronic and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, won three awards in Asia’s largest Electric Solar Vehicle Championship (ESVC) held at Sri Vishnu College of Engineering for Women, Bhimavaram in Andhra Pradesh, recently.
The team won the ’People’s choice award’, 1st prize for the best research paper and second prize in the hill climb event. The team secured the sixth position out of 35 teams qualified for final rounds. A total of 81 teams were registered for the event.
Team Mustangs was the only team from Karnataka that entered the final round after clearing all the technical inspections. The team was guided by Suhandas and Sowmya Anil, assistant professors from the Department of Electronic and Communication Engineering.
Electric Solar Vehicle Championship (ESVC) is Asia’s largest solar event, in association with Imperial Society of Innovative Engineers (ISIE), known for organising Motorsports events, live projects-based Industrial Training and Research and publication. It started in the year 2013. The basic objective of ISIE is to raise awareness among the future generation of engineers about renewable energy resources and push for their development in this sector.
Details of the car : The solar electric car is powered by solar energy. The car is designed using lithium-ion-48V 120Ah battery, which runs a 2.25kw BLDC motor connected to the car. The battery can be charged directly through the 230v 50Hz power supply and also through solar energy. The solar panel was designed to generate 560 watts of power and used to charge the battery and also to run the vehicle directly.
The car does not use any other fossil fuels, and hence it is totally eco-friendly. Once the battery is charged fully, the car can run up to 2.5 hours at a maximum speed of 50 kmph. Students also implemented many innovations, which include operation sports, normal driving mode, traction control, regenerative breaking, tilt detection and keyless start control using RFID. The car was built at a cost of Rs 5 lakh.
