Mangalore, April 4, 2014 : The presence of mind of a six year old boy has saved the life of his four year old cousin who had almost drowned in a water tank in an under construction site at Tokkottu.The brave boy is Mohammad Afran (6), son of Mohammad Mustafa and Maimoona couple, while the rescued boy is four year old Ibrahim Mohammad Rafi, son of M Mohammad of KC Road.
On March 30, Sunday, the family of M Mohammad including his son Ibrahim Mohammad Rafi had wife had arrived at the latter’s parental house to attend some function. On March 31, Monday Afran along with his cousin Rafi was playing near an under construction site close by their house. It is learnt, the water tank there was just filled with water brought in a tanker. The tanker had left the place soon after. The little boys who were playing nearby noticed the full water tank and Rafi who had bent to wash his feet fell into the tank which was 4.5 feet deep. Though Afran tried to pull him out, he couldn’t. With great presence of mind he raised a cry but none heard him as most of the nearby residents were either taking a nap in the afternoon or were watching TV.
Afran finding no other way ran towards home which was nearly 150 meter away and informed the elders. They rushed and by the time they arrived Rafi was floating in the tank and was unconscious. They immediately gave him first aid and took him to the nearby Derlakatte Hospital. The child was placed in ICU for a day and has been discharged on April 3, Thursday.
Though Rafi is recovered he is still in a state of shock. The brave boy Afran is a first standard student of Hazrath Sayyed Madani Urdu Higher Primary School at Ullal Halekote. His bravery has been appreciated by his school management, teachers and the public.
