Udupi : Students boycott classes protesting against gang rape

Udupi, June 24, 2013 : Students from various colleges of Udupi boycotted classes and observed a bundh on June 24, Monday to condemn the recent gang rape of a medical student at Manipal. The bandh call was given by the ABVP.


Hundreds of students also gathered near the Clock Tower in the town  and warned the authorities that they would intensify  their protest if the rapists were not apprehended at the earliest.


They charged the government of failure to ensure protection to women. The laws should be made stringent to check crimes against women like rapes, they demanded. They also urged to set up fast track courts to try the cases of crimes against women.

One of the protesting students even alleged that one person who was detained was released following intervention by a minister and warned of a protest outside the minister’s residence.

The students also took out a procession till the SP office and submitted a memorandum enlisting their demands.
