Tree planting scheme to enhance green cover - MCC

Mangalore, June 12, 2014: At a meeting to discuss the green cover of the city here recently, the Mayor said saplings would be distributed to students of schools on the outskirts of the central business district area where there was open space.

Mangalore City Corporation will plant saplings on the premises of 25 schools and distribute saplings to students of those schools within three months, Mayor Mahabala Marla added,  the saplings would be distributed through the Forest Department.

The corporation would put up hoardings in the city to create awareness on the need to increase green cover and protect the existing greenery.

Range Forest Officer Mangalore Clifford Lobo, said that the department had identified 27 locations in the city for planting during this rainy season. He suggested that the corporation identify five wards for intensive planting on a pilot basis and to increase the green cover.

The Mayor instructed MCC officials to send letters to the private companies maintaining the beaches in the district to plant saplings in the parking area and periphery. Greenery must be given an important place in the city of Mnagalore and DK.
