Udupi, July 6, 2014: The elections to the posts of Udupi Taluk Panchayat President and Vice President were held on July 5, Saturday amid police security. Sunitha Naika, a BJP member representing Hiriadka constituency and Ganesh Kumar also of the BJP, representing Udyavar constituency won the top two posts respectively by defeating the Congress candidates.
The Taluk Panchayat has 23 BJP members and 18 Congress members. Umesh Naika of Cherkady and Srikar Kanchan of Katapady had contested on behalf of the Congress for the top two posts respectively. BJP candidates secured 23 votes and the Congress candidates had to be satisfied with 18 votes.
In the previous elections, Gowri Poojarti was elected the TP Chief after supporters of Kundapur MLA Haladi Srinivas Shetty backed Congress members. The elections this time had aroused curiosity in this backdrop.
Former MLAs Raghupathi Bhat, Lalaji Mendon, ZP Member Geetanjali Suvarna, Mattar Ratnaker Hegde and others congratulated the newly elected Taluk Panchayat President and Vice President.
