Sea erosion intensifies with monsoon, residents and houses ravaged

Mangalore, June 16, 2014 : Many houses in Ullal are on the verge of collapse following intense sea erosion, in places like Kaiko, Hilary Nagara, Rifayiya Nagara. Atleast 100 persons have been shifted to a nearby stores building on June 14.

Elected representatives or officials have not responded to our plight. The officials have only made promises. Minister U T Khader has been to Umra. Now, the Chief Minister should respond to our woes, sea erosion has intensified with the SW monsoon, said the local residents.

The families of Asmath Sikandar, Shehanabanu, Beefathimma Ismail, Thaheera Abdul Salim, Mariamma Rahim, Athimolu Ibrahim, Iddinabba Beefathimma, Cherimonu, Umaibanu and others have had to shift out for safety.

"The elected representatives have promised compensation. I have small children. They do not have food to eat,” said U T Khaleel, a resident of Kadappara. “We do not have food and shelter. We have lost roof over our heads,” said Asyamma of Kaiko. An RCC house belonging to Someshwara Gram Panchayat member Chandrashekar Ucchil collapsed following sea erosion in Ucchila.  The house was constructed at a cost of Rs 25 lakh. Over 15 houses are facing threat of collapse in Ucchila.
