Mangalore, June 13, 2014: The monsoon, which entered the coastal districts two days ago, has intensified  There is heavy rain and it continued to most the day.  Rain lashed several regions in the State in the last 24 hours.


monsoon A house collapsed at Kannur ward in Mangalore city limits on Wednesday night. Two girls, Shamshad (16) and Sunaina (17), daughters of house owners Yaseen, suffered injuries. They were asleep along with other family members, when the house collapsed.

In another incident, a house wall collapsed at Valencia. A tree fell on a road at Mallikatta. Incessant rain also caused traffic snarls in several parts of Mangalore city. Motorists were seen struggling to reach their destination due to water logged roads.

Udupi district too continued to receive rains on Thursday. Sea erosion has intensified in Baindoor, Padubidri and Ullal regions. In Padubidri, a few coconut trees, as well as huge boulders dumped to check sea erosion, have been washed away.

In the last 24 hours, as on Thursday morning, Moodbidri received highest rain of 99 mm, followed by Bantwal (77 mm), Mangalore (57.8 mm), Belthangady (45 mm), Puttur (32.9 mm), Sullia (14.2 mm) and Kadaba (12 mm).

Sudden rains that lashed for a few minutes in Davangere on Thursday brought respite to the people. Traffic and normal life was affected for some time on the busy streets and commercial areas.

Intermittent rains continued to lash various parts of Shimoga district . Sagar, Shikaripur, Sorab, Hosanagar, Thirthahalli, Bhadravathi and Shimoga witnessed intermittent rainfall throughout the day. It is predicted that SW monsoon will be a little less than normal this season.
