Beltangady, Jun 21, 2013: Dakshina Kannada SP Abhishek Goyal has urged managements of temples and Basadis to ensure safety of the shrines to be appointing night watchmen and also installing closed circuit cameras to tackle the case of thefts.
He was addressing a meeting of heads of temples and Basadis arranged at the Sannidhi Guest House at Dharmasthala on June 20, Thursday, in the wake of a spate of thefts in Basadis in the recent past.
Pointing out that the police department faced shortage of staff, the SP highlighted the role of locals in volunteering to protect the shrines. He said the Beltangady police station had just 40 staff while appeal has been made to the Home Ministry to recruit additional staff.
He said while temple managements should put in efforts, the police department also would do its level best. He also assured to set up a special police task force to check crime cases.
Nemiraj Ariga, State convener of Karnataka Jain Swayam Seva Sangha,Shashikiran Jain, lawyer, Jayakeerthi Jain, Taluk President of Karnataka State Government Employees Association, Sadananda Varnekar, Deputy Superintendent of police, Sudhaker Naik, circle inspector, Yogeesh Kumar, SI, Rajashekhar Ajri, President of Bangadi Basadi, Ratnavarma Jain and others were present.
SP Abhishek Goyal also visited the Basadi at Bangadi from where several idols were stolen. Several police officials also accompanied him during the visit.
